Trailers: Poltergeist, San Andreas, and Masterminds
POLTERGEIST
In this modern retelling of the Spielberg classic, a family must rid their house of evil forces that have abducted their daughter through their television set… What? It could happen. Each member of the family must then individually face their deepest fears before the poltergeist uses the child as a vessel to escape. The film looks to stay true to the original style with a few obvious nods here and there, and Sam Rockwell usually makes good career choices. However, anything with Sam Raimi’s name on it is something to be wary of. Luckily he’s just producing this time around. We still haven’t fully forgiven him for Spider-Man 3.
Poltergeist stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon Sharbino, Kyle Catlett, Jared Harris, and Kennedi Clements. Written by David Lindsay-Abaire. Directed by Gil Kenan. In theaters May 22.
SAN ANDREAS
Who doesn’t like seeing a good ol’ mass destruction movie every so often? Statistically speaking, New Yorkers and Californians probably. No need to worry New Yorkers, you all get a pass this time (maybe). San Andreas tells the story of a massive earthquake along the San Andreas Fault large enough that it can be felt all the way on the East Coast. We’re talking the largest earthquake ever recorded. Historic buildings and landmarks will crumble to the ground and thousands of people will die as they become submerged under giant waves, but not if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has anything to say about it. He’ll use his muscles, helicopters, and speedboats to save his family, possibly more if he has time. As impressive as that might be, the real props must be given to the crew member that decided to use that ominous “California Dreamin'” cover song over this trailer.
San Andreas stars Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, and Paul Giamatti. Written by Carlton Cuse, Andre Fabrizio, and Jeremy Passmore. Direct by Brad Payton. In theaters May 29.
MASTERMINDS
From the director of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre and the writers behind Eastbound and Down comes this story of a simpleminded armored car driver that’s fed up with the daily grind. Upon being easily convinced by his workplace crush, they manage to pull off a $17 million dollar heist. With an ensemble cast and crew like this one it’s bound to be good for some laughs. Honestly, it’s just good to see more comedies on the horizon that don’t star Melissa McCarthy.
Masterminds stars Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, and Ken Marino. Written by Chris Bowman, Jody Hill, Danny McBride, Hubbel Palmer, Emily Spivey. Directed by Jared Hess.
