[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]ccording to a report from The Wall Street Journal, video streaming giant Netflix is in talks with Nintendo to create a live-action series based on one of the most beloved and iconic video game franchises of all time: The Legend of Zelda. Before you break out your swords and shields just yet, keep in mind that it could be a significant amount of time before you’re able to stream the adventures of Link to your favorite devices as the project currently has no writer attached.
The report from WSJ stated that a source close to the project described the direction of the series as “Game of Thrones for a family audience.” I don’t think there’s really such a thing as GoT that you’d feel comfortable watching with your mom, but I’m sure they mean that it will be set in fantasy worlds just like the series of Zelda games, so that kind of goes without saying.
In addition to several Japanese manga, the only other adaptation of Link and Princess Zelda fighting for the Kingdom of Hyrule was the infamous 1989 animated series that ran for only one season totaling 13 episodes. The show’s lasting legacy was Link’s catchphrase: “Well excuuuuuuse me, Princess!” Yep, that was the high point.

There are a total of 17 official releases in the Legend of Zelda video game series beginning with NES’s The Legend of Zelda in 1986 and the next title to be released will be The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D for Nintendo 3DS on February 13.
WSJ reached out to Netflix, whose spokeswoman declined to comment on the project, as well as Nintendo, whose representative stated that the video game company “doesn’t comment on rumors and speculation.” Both companies are playing things very close to the chest at the moment, but we’ll have more once there is any sort of development on the story.
