[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he upcoming Fantastic Four reboot has garnered some less than favorable attention when it was revealed that the film was undergoing reshoots with one unnamed Twentieth Century Fox executive calling the project “a mess,” according to a report by comic/movie news site Bleeding Cool.
Later that same day the film’s screenwriter Simon Kinberg sat down with Latino Review and shed some light on a few things:
“To confirm — Fantastic Four will be doing 3-4 days of additional photography with director Josh Trank and some key cast members. We are very excited about the film and can’t wait for you to see what we’ve been up to. And you will be able to do that very soon as I can confirm here that the teaser will be on Kingsman in theaters February 13.”
It’s a good move by Fox to attach the film’s teaser to Kingsman: The Secret Service (another Marvel property), and Kinberg made the most of the negative situation by announcing the teaser’s release date in an effort to maintain that the film is not in trouble.
The next day Fox’s public relations team reached out to Bleeding Cool to emphasize that it is “relatively standard for some pick up shots with the director post the main shoot wrapping.” However, the site was informed by crew members that reshoots had already been underway for some time, millions of dollars had been allocated for the process, and the film’s sets in Louisiana were being rebuilt.
While the film seems to be hitting a few roadblocks, all of the extra time spent on the project could end up benefitting fans of the Fantastic Four franchise. The first two films definitely left something to be desired, and Fox has proven in recent years that the studio takes its comic book properties very seriously. The current X-Men series of films has been outstanding, so I am hopeful that the studio can replicate that level of creativity in the reboot of this beloved franchise.
