[dropcap size=small]C[/dropcap]omic book movies fared extremely well at the box office in 2014, and the majority of the highest grossing actors starred in one. We’ll take a look at the past year’s highest grossing actors in terms of global box office revenue as reported by Box Office Mojo.
10. Hugh Jackman
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $746 million USD
Jackman’s only film of 2014 was the blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past in which he reprised his trademark role of Wolverine. The film’s $746 million global gross alone was enough to land him in the top 10.
9. James McAvoy
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $746 million USD
The bulk of McAvoy’s worldwide gross comes from Days of Future Past, but his independent film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby grossed approximately $1 million, giving Professor X a slight edge over Logan.
8. Michael Fassbender
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $747 million USD
Fassbender benefited from starring as Magneto in Days of Future Past, and like McAvoy, he also had a smaller picture released. Frank was met to rave reviews and grossed roughly $1.6 million.
7. Angelina Jolie
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $758 million USD
Jolie directed a film in 2014, but she only starred in one other: Disney’s Maleficent. The re-telling of Sleeping Beauty was a massive hit for Jolie and is her highest grossing film to date.
6. Emma Stone
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $764 million USD
Stone grossed the majority of her total thanks to Amazing Spider-Man 2, but her other 2014 films Magic in the Moonlight and Birdman totalled an additional $56 million to bring her to sixth on the list.
5. Chris Evans
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $801 million USD
Evans portrayed Capt. Steve Rogers for the third time in Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier, which brought in over $714 million. His South Korean sci-fi film Snowpiercer grossed enough overseas to take Evans’s total to $800 million.
4. Mark Wahlberg
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $1 billion USD
Wahlberg is the first on the list to break the $1 billion mark thanks solely to Transformers: Age of Extinction, which proves that the series is still a very bankable property even if the more recent films have been met with negative critical reviews.
3. Scarlett Johansson
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $1.18 billion USD
Like her Captain America co-star Chris Evans, Johansson’s total gross benefitted greatly from Winter Soldier, while Under the Skin and Lucy helped take her total box office well over $1 billion.
2. Chris Pratt
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $1.2 billion USD
2014 was definitely Pratt’s year. He became a superstar thanks to his role as Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, which was the highest grossing domestic film of the year. He also voiced Lego Emmet in the extremely popular The Lego Movie, which added another $468 million to his total.
1. Jennifer Lawrence
Worldwide Box Office Gross: $1.4 billion USD
Lawrence is the fourth X-Men star to appear on the list, but her role as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 launched her all the way to the top spot with an additional $695 million. Expect to see Lawrence on next year’s list when the Mockingjay finale hits theaters.
