Mashable reports that acclaimed actor and professional creepy person Willem Dafoe will voice Ryuk in the live-action Netflix adaptation of Death Note.
Dafoe is best known for his roles in Platoon, The Boondock Saints, and Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy as Norman Osborn/ Green Goblin.
Death Note, originally an extremely popular 12-volume manga, follows Light Yagami, a genius high school student who discovers a notebook that allows you to kill anyone by knowing their name and face, called a Death Note. With this power, Light seeks to rebuild the world as a utopia, and cleanse it of anyone he views as evil.
Light’s Death Note is gifted to him by Dafoe’s character, Ryuk the Shinigami a bored supernatural being of immense power.
A live-action Hollywood adaptation of Death Note has been in development for years, but the project was finally greenlit for Netflix last year. The film will be directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest), and stars Nat Wolff as Light Yagami.
With a distinct voice and ability to turn the creepy up to 11, we think Dafoe will do just fine in this role.
Death Note comes to Netflix in 2017.
