The sequel is set in Depression-era London and Mary Poppins is returning to the Banks family once again.
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap] first look at Emily Blunt as the magical and wondrous Mary Poppins has been released by Disney and if you didn’t look close enough at the photo it would be easy to think that Julie Andrews had become young again. Emily Blunt’s outfit in this photo is very similar to that of Julie Andrews’ in the original 1964 Disney musical with the only difference being Mary Poppins’ carpet bag. The photo has an uncanny resemblance to Cherry Tree lane and we’d be willing to bet that Emily Blunt/Mary Poppins is standing outside of the Banks family’s household once again.
Mary Poppins Returns picks up two decades after the events of the first film with Mary Poppins taking the Banks children on another journey filled with laughter and magic. Jane and Michael (played by the actors Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw) have long since grown up and the script for the film drew heavily from stories within the other seven books of P.L. Travers’ original children’s series.
The cast of Mary Poppins Returns is impressive with, in addition to Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) as a musical lamplighter named Jack, Meryl Streep (Mama Mia!) as Mary Poppins’ whimsical cousin Topsy, Colin Firth (The Kingsman) as the banker William Weatherall Wilkins, Julie Walters (Brooklyn) as loyal housekeeper Ellen. Original star Dick Van Dyke will reportedly be making a featured appearance in the sequel as well.
Mary Poppins Returns hits theaters December 25, 2018.
