‘The Walking Dead’ Gets a Spinoff… Pilot

It seems like the cool thing to do right now over at AMC is to make spinoffs of their existing, wildly successful series. First in the lineup of spinoffs will be Better Call Saul, which sees lawyer Saul Goodman branching out on his own from his Breaking Bad fame, and the second most recently announced spinoff is currently untitled but will relate to The Walking Dead.

Co-created by Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson, the spinoff is said to feature a completely different cast, but will take place in the same zombie apocalypse as the events of the original series, just on a different side of the world. The current producers of The Walking Dead, Robert Kirkman, Gale Ann Herd, and David Alpert will also serve as producers for this new series, while Academy Award winner Adam Davidson (Community, About a Boy) is set to direct the pilot.

So far, a full series has yet to be ordered, but knowing how well The Walking Dead has done, it’s hard to believe that it won’t get picked up. Shooting for the pilot will begin later this year.

The story is set to follow two separate families and one additional character, six main characters in total. The Cabreras, a father and son; the Tompkins, a single mom with two teenaged children; and Andrea Chapman who is attempting to cope with her own tragedy.

Here are the full character descriptions:

  • SEAN CABRERA – A Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

  • CODY CABRERA – Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

  • NANCY TOMPKINS – A thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.

  • NICK TOMPKINS – Nancy’s screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

  • ASHLEY TOMPKINS – Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom but it’s time to get out of Dodge.

  • ANDREA CHAPMAN – A somewhat wilted flower child, fortysomething Andrea — yep, another Andrea! — has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

No official cast or air date has been set, but it’s safe to assume that we’ll see it on AMC at some point next year.

So there you have it folks, all of the information that we currently know about the new The Walking Dead spinoff. Are you a current fan of The Walking Dead? Is this spinoff coming too soon? Does this sound like something you would watch? Let us know in the comments below!
