Sony Assures ‘The Last Guardian’ Is Not Dead

Those of you who were worried that the long awaited release of Team Ico’s The Last Guardian might not happen, fear not. Sony is reaffirming the project is still alive, despite a seemingly abandoned trademark.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he project, which has been in development for nearly half a decade, was rumored to have been dead after Sony’s trademark on the game’s title was canceled after they failed to file an extension on the trademark, which they had habitually done since 2013.

Rumors of the troubled game’s cancellation began to swirl after GameSpot broke the story regarding the the canceled trademark, but Sony has since responded saying that it “can confirm that The Last Guardian is still in development.” They attributed the cancellation of the trademark to an administrative error.

The project was formally announced way back in 2009, though director Fumito Ueda said his creative contribution to the project was completed a “long time ago.”

Back in December, Ueda announced that the game was still moving forward under “completely new conditions”, leading to speculation that the game was being reworked as a PS4 title instead of a PS3 title as originally planned.

At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if it The Last Guardian has to be re-re-worked as a PS5 title.
