Could the rumors be true?

[toggler title=”TL;DR” ]Theories suggest that Brainiac could appear in Man of Steel 2 in persuit of the codex of the Kryptonian race. Supergirl is implicated, and Bizarro could be brought about by Brainiac.[/toggler]

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he sequel to Man of Steel has been the subject of much speculation and scrutiny over the past few months. Claims were made that it was being put on permanent hold until 2020, – which has since been disputed – and the rumour that director George Miller (of Mad Max: Fury Road fame) was in the running to take on the film began to circulate. But talk isn’t stopping there.

Now rumours have surfaced about which characters could feature in the next Superman project when it eventually goes ahead.

The following – whilst being possible – is all just speculation, so take it with a pinch of salt for the moment.

The theory goes – according to the Founder of Heroic Hollywood, Umberto Gonzalez – that after the events of Man of Steel, Superman has the ‘genetic codex for the entire Kryptonian race’ – which General Zod was after – and it’s now Brainiac that seeks the same said codex for his own means.

Instead of getting it from Superman however, Brainiac seeks to pursue Kal-El’s cousin, Kara Zor-El (aka Supergirl). Bizarro is said to come into it because Brainiac makes use of what knowledge he does have about the Kryptonians to create Bizarro, and aid his cause.

Supergirl seems to be the most feasible character to make an appearance. After all, there was a particular Easter egg in Man of Steel that had fans talking back in 2013, and it certainly seemed to hint at her future role. The Easter egg evidence is made all the more credible when linked to the Man of Steel Prequel comic that was released around the same time as the movie.

This Easter egg is the open pod/sarcophagus on the Fortress of Solitude that can be seen for but a moment as Superman explores the area; its prominent position within the shot seems to give it some significance. In the prequel comic, Supergirl can be seen exiting the same pod, and tying those two ends together draws a very clear picture. It could have been an intentional hint, signalling her upcoming part in the sequel.

According to Gonzalez, the sequel was originally intended as a platform for introducing Supergirl, and that she would have as big a part to play as Superman. Apparently her key role was what drew George Millers attention to the project in the first place.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly for their Comic Con Preview edition, Zack Synder reportedly mentioned Brainiac as being one of the main villains in the pipeline, making his appearance in Man of Steel 2 a serious prospect.

‘I remember talking about ‘What’s the next villain? ‘We can’t do another alien invasion.’ Brainiac was definitely down the road.’

Whilst these are still only rumours coupled with some conjecture, they certainly aren’t outside the realms of possibility. We’ll just have to wait and see.
