Batman Beyond to Finally Introduce a “Robin Beyond”?

The futuristic Batman may get a sidekick of his own.

Batman Beyond is a series that has been running for quite a while after a very successful animated series (it was cancelled but it has its following) and several variations of its own comic book arcs. From a continuation of sorts after the animated series in the same artistic style, to the current DC Rebirth, Terry McGinnis is officially the Batman of the future. But that begs the question; what about Robin?

If you have not caught up on the comics, or have at least familiarized yourself with the characters, you would know that Terry has a younger brother named Matt who discovers Terry’s secret life of super-heroics in Neo Gotham. As Matt starts to unravel more of what his brother has been up to, he eventually comes into contact with Bruce Wayne and the Batcave. Be warned, the snippets below might be a bit much if you aren’t caught up on all that is happening (particularly in issue #14) in the series and may give away more than you’re interested in knowing.

As it turns out, Bruce’s real reason for retiring wasn’t just because he got old. In fact, the larger reason is due to his encounter with “the Banes” (four pseudo-successors to the original Bane, all with the powerful Venom formula at their disposal), and his son Damian creating many an issue for the late Dark Knight. To help him through it all, Terry decides to move in and help Bruce out, and Matt joins in to assist where he can.

Robin’s role as a sidekick is usually portrayed by a younger male companion with some acrobatic and or fighting skill set (with some exceptions, of course). Even though Matt isn’t much of either with those things, its clear that there is some obvious foreshadowing here with the intent and possibility of Matt receiving training by the elder Wayne while the two of them play Oracle in the Batcave while Terry is out beating bad guys to a pulp with his bare hands among the streets of Gotham.

Sure, this isn’t necessarily confirmed or anything, but its been a while since we last had a new Robin and if memory serves, Terry McGinnis never had one. It seems only fitting that the role would be filled by his younger, and quite capable brother Matt. And if this does happen, this would be the first time a pair of brothers took on the dual-role of Batman and Robin since, well, ever. Seems like a fun and interesting way to go, so hopefully the powers that be will make this come to fruition.

Batman Beyond #14 is available now.
