Virtual reality on PS4 begins this October.
During the Games Developers Conference in San Fransisco, Sony announced that their virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR, will cost $399, and launch this October.
PS VR comes packed in with a headset, connection cables, headphones, power supply, as well as HDMI and USB cables. A PS4 is required to use PS VR.
Additionally, PS VR requires the PlayStation Camera, which is currently not bundled in with PS VR, and costs $59.99 at retail. Also, some games may require PlayStation Move controllers, which isn’t included either.
5o VR games will be available to play this year, made by developers ranging from big first-party studios to small indie teams.
One of these games is a Star Wars Battlefront VR experience, exclusive to the platform. Not much is known about this title, other than it will be developed by DICE and published by EA.
Sony also revealed a new feature of the headset called “Cinematic Mode.” This will allow users to play regular PS4 titles or watch movies in the headset while emerged in large virtual screen, as if users are actually in the game/movie.
PS VR isn’t the only virtual reality platform launching this year. Oculus Rift, supported by Microsoft, will launch later this month, but it costs $600 and requires a high-end PC. The HTC Vive, another competing headset, launches this April for $800, thus making PS VR the most affordable announced VR headset.
It’s a little surreal living in a world where consumer ready virtual reality is here, but we can’t wait to try it out.
