Just in case Boston didn’t already have enough going on between baseball, history, and aggressively loud opinions, Toei Animation has decided it’s once again time to unleash pirates on Fenway Park. This May, Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Crew return to Beantown for a Boston Red Sox x ONE PIECE Theme Night, marking the studio’s third straight year turning America’s most historic ballpark into an anime fan pilgrimage site.

The event takes place on Tuesday, May 12, when the Boston Red Sox face off against the Philadelphia Phillies. At this point, the crossover has officially graduated from “fun experiment” to “annual tradition,” giving East Coast anime fans their own recurring excuse to yell about pirates while holding overpriced stadium food.

Toei Animation is clearly aware that it has struck gold here. Lisa Yamatoya, Senior Director and Head of Marketing for Toei Animation Inc., said the studio is thrilled to return to Fenway Park and confirmed what fans already know: these Red Sox x ONE PIECE nights have become a highly anticipated yearly celebration, and another sellout is very much expected.

Tickets for ONE PIECE Night are on sale now and are available exclusively through redsox.com/onepiece or directly at the Fenway Park ticket office. Both General Admission and VIP theme tickets are back, because fandom, like baseball, has tiers. Every theme ticket holder will receive a commemorative ONE PIECE Boston Red Sox bomber jacket, featuring a Straw Hat Crew Jolly Roger on the front and a chibi-style Luffy on the back, dressed in a Red Sox jersey and holding a baseball like he’s about to steal second base and overthrow the government.

VIP ticket holders, meanwhile, get an extra perk in the form of a special edition plush of Wally the Green Monster, dressed specifically for the occasion, because nothing says “anime crossover” like Boston’s most unsettling mascot getting a cosplay upgrade.

As with past years, this event is expected to sell out, so fans are encouraged to act fast. After all, history shows that if you hesitate, you’ll be left outside Fenway wondering how an anime about pirates became one of the hottest tickets in Major League Baseball.
