Nintendo’s First Mobile Game, ‘Miitomo,’ Has Been Revealed

Well, it’s not Mario or Animal Crossing

Nintendo, and partner company DeNA, have just unveiled their first* smartphone exclusive game, Miitomo.

Miitomo will allow your Mii, a player created avatar introduced through the Wii, to interact with other Mii’s without your knowledge.

The Mii will travel through the web and communicate with each other, as well as sharing information about themselves.

This is a premise very similar to the 2014 3DS game Tomodachi Life, which also featured Mii characters befriending each other.

The game is set to follow a free to play model, meaning add-ons like Mii accessories will cost extra.

Nintendo announced earlier this year that they would be partnering with the Japanese mobile giant DeNA and enter the mobile space with a series of games that would release starting this year.

Unfortunately, Nintendo also announced that Miitomo will not launch until March 2016, and that four other new mobile games will release through March 2017.

It’s no secret that Nintendo is undergoing great changes as a company. While they have a new console dubbed ‘NX’ on the way, their current console, Wii U, has been suffering from poor sales.

Can mobile games reinvigorate this beloved company? We’ll have to wait and see.

*Although the recently revealed mobile game Pokémon Go is technically a Nintendo game (as they have a stake in the Pokemon Company) Miitomo is the first mobile game to be developed by Nintendo.
