In a thrilling announcement at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con this past Friday, fans of the iconic Showtime series Dexter were treated to the news they had been hoping for: Michael C. Hall is officially returning to his role as Dexter Morgan in a new sequel/revival series titled Dexter: Resurrection. This highly anticipated series will run on Showtime alongside the previously announced prequel series Dexter: Original Sin to which Hall will also be featured as the inner-voice and narrator. A teaser for Original Sin was also revealed during the Dexter panel, which you can see here:
Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter (Patrick Gibson) as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry (Golden Globe® winner Christian Slater), he adopts a Code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Dexter: Original Sin, which follows a young Dexter played by Patrick Gibson, will feature Michael C. Hall in a unique way. Hall will lend his voice to the inner-monologue of young Dexter, providing the narration that fans have come to love. This prequel series is set to debut this December, offering a fresh look at Dexter’s formative years and the early development of his dark passenger. The show will run on Showtime as well as Paramount+. The show will feature Patrick Gibson as Dexter, Molly Brown as Debra Morgan, Chrstina Millan as Maria LaGuerta, James Martinez as Angel Batista, Alex Smimizu as Vince Masuka, and Chrsitian Slater as Harry Morgan. You can check out the full cast over on IMDB.
Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global co-CEO and president/CEO, Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, had the following to say in a statement:
“We are thrilled to have the brilliant Michael C. Hall reprise his iconic role as Dexter Morgan in Showtime’s most successful series ever.”
“While Dexter: Resurrection will appeal to the tens of millions of longtime fans, Dexter: Original Sin will introduce a whole new generation of viewers into this iconic series by starting from the beginning, which is sure to satisfy existing audiences as well.”
The details of how Dexter will be brought back to life remain a mystery but there are numerous possibilities—perhaps a retcon of previous events, a dream sequence, or even a “what if?” scenario. Or, it could just be as simple as Dexter surviving the gunshot wound. However, we hope there is some retconning because New Blood didn’t exactly provide us with a version of Dexter Morgan that we grew to love.
Whatever the case may be, the return of Michael C. Hall to this iconic role has ignited a wave of enthusiasm among fans.
The anticipation for both Dexter: Original Sin and Dexter: Resurrection is palpable, and fans eagerly await the return of Dexter Morgan to their screens. Showtime is set to deliver a thrilling continuation and expansion of the Dexter universe, promising to captivate audiences once again with the complex and compelling world of Dexter Morgan.
