Marvel claims they are “creatively and emotionally” committed to Natasha Romanoff.

[dropcap size=small]E[/dropcap]ver since Scarlett Johansson first appeared in Iron Man 2 as one of Marvel’s most beloved characters fans have been begging the entertainment juggernaut to put together a Black Widow standalone film. The talk of a possible standalone film starring Scarlett Johansson was first mentioned by Marvel CEO Kevin Feige back in 2010 when he said that Marvel had “started discussions” with the actress about the possibility of her very own film and up until now no one had heard if the discussions had been a success. Thankfully, it seems that is all about to change.

While being interviewed by Deadline, Kevin Feige responded to the question of which character had the best chance of getting their very own standalone film in the future. The CEO said:

“We’ve announced the next nine movies, 10 counting Civil War, through the end of 2019. Where we go beyond that are ongoing discussions that we’ll focus on in the next few years because we have a lot to do before then. Of the characters that you’ve just mentioned I would say certainly the one creatively and emotionally that we are most committing to doing is Black Widow. We think she’s an amazing character. We think Scarlett Johansson’s portrayal of her is amazing. She’s a lead Avenger and has amazing stories in her own right to tell that we think would be fun to turn into a stand-alone franchise.”

This is great news not only for the Marvel Cinematic Universe but also for whatever Marvel plans on doing following the events of their Phase 3 plan. Having a Black Widow standalone film opens up a wide variety of possibilities that not only explains just what the Black Widow program is, which was first mentioned in ABC’s Agent Carter series but we might finally figure out what actually happened in Budapest since both Hawkeye and Black Widow seem to remember the event differently. Even the Russo Brothers, who were in charge of directing Captain America: The Winter Solider and Captain America: Civil War, are down for a Black Widow standalone film.

“We find that the character is one of the richest, if not the richest, character in the Marvel universe,” said Joe Russo about the deadly spy. “She’s a very complex character. She’s haunted by demons and her understanding of the world is fascinating. I think there is a lot that can be done with that character.”
