Latest Civil War Trailer May Have Teased Too Much

Potential movie spoilers and definite comic book spoilers ahead. You have been warned.

Captain America: Civil War is possibly the most hotly anticipated Marvel movie ever made; the film’s second trailer, released only four days ago, has amassed nearly 37 million views.

Now to be fair, I account for at least half of those views, but even I missed perhaps the biggest clue yet as to which of the characters doesn’t make it through the film.

Fortunately, we have Reddit to do that for us. One keen-eyed user has pulled a single frame from the trailer, which reveals one of the main characters looking in pretty bad shape.

Yep, that’s Bucky Barnes lying apparently dead on the ground while Cap tears into Iron Man. We can assume that Tony is going to pay Winter Soldier in kind for shooting War Machine out of the sky and starting the Civil War.

We can also assume that War Machine isn’t going to die in Civil War. Not only to we see him later in the trailer, Marvel wouldn’t show us the death of a recurring character in a trailer, would they?

Bucky’s death is entirely possible – we know someone is going to die in this movie – and it would take Cap to darker places going forward, which could certainly be interesting, but I’m inclined to think that this is less of a mistake and more of a mislead.

It makes sense that Iron Man is able to take Bucky out of the fight early, leaving a one-on-one battle with Cap, which is the finale we’ve been waiting for/building towards, but there’s nothing to suggest he has to die for that to happen. The loss of a prosthetic limb alone, while admittedly not ideal, is unlikely to be deadly.

What’s more, Sebastian Stan has a nine-picture deal with Marvel Studios, which adds to the idea that the movie will follow the comic book and kill off its title character, leaving Bucky and his one arm to take the reigns.

That said, the trailer has already shown us a whole different Civil War to the one we know from the comics, and Bucky’s death could add a whole new level of incentive going into the film’s finale.

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6th in the US, and the 29th of April in the UK. We’ll try not to spoil it for you.
