[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap]cademy Award- winning actor Jared Leto is reportedly circling a role in David Ayer’s recently announced Suicide Squad film, and sources say that the role could possibly be that of iconic Batman villain The Joker.
Neither Warner Bros. nor Jared Leto’s camp has commented on the latest rumors to set the internet abuzz.
Tom Hardy, Will Smith, and Margot Robbie are also reportedly in various stages of negotiations to star in the film. It’s also expected that Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role as Lex Luthor from the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Perhaps one of the less-known DC Comics properties from Warner Bros. upcoming film slate, Suicide Squad follows a group of supervillains who are given a chance at redemption by the government. They are sent on a dangerous mission in which it is likely all the members of the squad will be killed.
It is speculated that the Joker character will appear in the film, and that Ryan Gosling was originally sought for the role, but he was unwilling to sign a multi-picture commitment.
Leto, who recently won an Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club, was led to Warner Bros. after a failed shot at Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
While the Joker was not included in the original screenplay for the film, that script is expected to be rewritten with a part for the Clown Prince. The film is almost certain to include the character Harley Quinn and, usually, wherever she is Mr. J is not far behind.
It is possible that the studio is still reluctant to fill the big shoes left behind by Heath Ledger, who won a posthumous Oscar for his portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, but such a popular character can’t be left out of the DC Cinematic Universe for much longer.
