A brand-new poster for the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy movie has dropped, and it is surprisingly kind of a big deal. Not because it shows Mario striking a heroic pose, not because Bowser looks like he’s about to commit another mushroom felony, and not even because there’s a Luma floating around looking marketable. No, this one is getting attention because the poster features none other than Fox McCloud himself.

Yes, that Fox McCloud. As in the pilot from the Star Fox series. As in the character who absolutely does not belong anywhere near the Mushroom Kingdom unless somebody at Nintendo has a whiteboard covered in red string and the words “Cinematic Universe” written in the middle of it.
Normally, posters for these kinds of movies just show the characters you expect. Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Toad, Yoshi, the usual lineup of people who have been falling into pits and collecting coins together since the Reagan administration. But this poster is different, like someone wants us to notice that Nintendo owns a lot of characters and might be getting ready to do something much bigger than one movie about plumbers in space.
And that raises the question nobody was seriously asking before but now cannot stop asking: are we heading toward a Nintendo cinematic universe? Because once Fox McCloud shows up in a Mario movie, the next logical step is not subtle. The next logical step is a Super Smash Bros. movie where every franchise shows up, punches each other for two hours, and somehow still makes a billion dollars.
For now, all we know for sure is that Super Mario Galaxy hits theaters on April 1st, and if this poster is any indication, Nintendo may not just be making another movie. They might be building a whole galaxy of them.
