[dropcap size=small]I[/dropcap]t’s been a long time, but the Independence Day sequel release date has been announced! Independence Day: Resurgence will be in theaters June 24th, 2016!

The announcement and Q&A session livestream took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which included a Human Hybrid Fighter and a moon tug displayed behind the cast. “This technology came from aliens. We cannot build alien technology, but we can harvest it.” says Director Roland Emmerich. Emmerich also said that this movie will be during a post-war generation. The events from Independence Day is now called the ‘War of 1996.

The main cast includes Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Sela Ward, Bill Pullman, Jesse Usher, Maika Monroe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch.

David Levinson (played by Jeff Goldblum), is the director of Earth Space Defense, a company in charge of protecting the Earth and working together with other countries against a common enemy: aliens. David’s father, Julius (played by Judd Hirsch), plans to keep his father-son connection strong, no matter where they are.

Sela Ward will play President Lanford, the successor to President Whitmore (Bill Pullman). Ward’s character is said to be more aggressive in her role than Pullman was. Pullman’s role is unknown for this movie since he will not be the President of the United States.

Liam Hemsworth plays Jake Morrison, an orphan who grew up to become a fighter pilot. But during his time as a fighter pilot, he made a mistake that not only cost him his job, but was moved to the moon to work at the moon base. Hemsworth operates a moon tug, which is an advanced form of a fork lift.

Maika Monroe plays Patricia Whitmore, a special agent who works for President Lanford. She also had to deal with growing up with a famous father, just like Jake Morrison.

It’s interesting to see Brent Spiner cast in the movie as Dr. Okun. The last time we saw him in the prequel, he was being suffocated by the alien that was captured and taken to Area 51 lab for experiments. But he’s back and his hair will be longer than the first one!

Vivica A. Fox “no longer works the pole” and instead works as a hospital administrator. In the movie, she supports her son Dylan Hiller (Jesse Usher) and his decisions.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect about this movie is that Will Smith, star actor in the first Independence Day, will not appear in the sequel. But the son of Will Smith’s character, Jesse Usher, will be in this movie. Usher plays Dylan Hiller, who lived most of his young life in the shadow of his father, who helped save the world.

“I didn’t want to do the sequel at first, but seeing the technology advances in the movie 2012 made me think that a sequel was possible” said director Roland Emmerich.

Independence Day: Resurgence will be in theaters June 24th, 2016.
