Coming to HBO in 2022, the Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon features an all-star cast, an intriguing premise, and plenty of CGI dragons. But will that be enough to bring fans back after the disastrous finale of the main series?
House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events taking place in the original series, and follows the story of House Targaryen and their decline into near extinction and the Dance of Dragons storyline. Despite such a unique premise, many on social media (us included) have expressed significant disinterest after the blunder of an ending under DB Weiss and David Benioff after running out of source material. However, there are some good things under the hood for this show.
While we are going to wait until we hear the initial reaction from viewers and critics before allowing ourselves to get invested, the fact that Weiss and Benioff aren’t writing or producing House of the Dragon, among other things, is quite promising. Not only that but A Song of Fire and Ice creator George R.R. Martin, who was heavily involved in the first four seasons of Game of Thrones is involved with HotD, specifically in the writing process. Plus, showrunners Ryan J. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik have expressed their desire to avoid abandoning any plots related to magic like Weiss and Benioff chose to do.
For all it’s worth, we will keep an eye on how well or not so well that this show does. We won’t have long to find out when it arrives next year.
