“Malcolm Reynolds and Han Solo walk into a bar. Who walks out?”

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]here are few shows that are adored, celebrated, and cherished as much as Firefly. This cult sci-fi western series that was cancelled after only 11 episodes has lived on through an avid fan base, and its caring cast and crew.

Last weekend during the New York Comic Con, a handful of the show’s cast attended a panel to celebrate the show, and the 10 -year anniversary of Serenity, the theatrical continuation of the series.

Nathan Fillion (Mal), Alan Tudyk (Wash), Gina Torres (Zoë), and Jewel Staite (Kaylee) attended the reunion, and they were each more than happy to reminisce, and answer fan questions.

Here are some highlights from the panel.

The actors each spoke to the experiences they had memorizing their lines for the show. Everyone had vary degrees of difficulty with their material, as the dialogue was often a mix of English and Chinese.

Fillion recalled the process of receiving the dialogue they would have to learn:

“We got the translation [of Chinese phrases] in the script, and then we got a cassette tape,” Fillion explained, and then turned to his cast mates. “Remember those? They helped us with the Chinese.”

He also revealed that the voice on these tapes was very calm and monotone, so even swear words sounded, “really soft and nicely said.”

Following this, Staite disclosed some shocking information.

“I have a confession to make,” Staite said. “I never listened to the tapes. I just swung it. I was terrible. Actually, all of my Chinese [for the show] is ADR’ed later on, to be more precise, because they couldn’t figure out why I was the only one who wasn’t getting it. And that’s why!”

While this revelation surprised most of the cast, Torres simply exclaimed, “Genius!”

The panel was also full of laughter from the cast and audience. Perhaps the biggest uproar was caused by, of course, Fillon, when he answered the question, “Malcolm Reynolds and Han Solo walk into a bar. Who walks out?”

Fillon fired back with, ‘Everybody else.”

Before things wrapped up, there was the (expected) question of whether the show would be revived, but there was a little more to it than that.

A fan asked that if Firefly were to be revived, would the cast want to return to their full-time roles or would they prefer to cameo, setting the stage for new characters.

Fillon quickly answered, “Full time, please.”

The panel was full great moments and memories, as well as a reminder why Firefly is so beloved in the first place.
