WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar released the first concept art for HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon on Thursday. The images, which you can see below in a tweet from HBO, were shared by Kilar at the very end of a blog post where she announced all WarnerMedia films would be released on HBO Max.
“Principal photography starts on the next Game of Thrones series, House of the Dragon, in a few months,” Kilar wrote. “Look out for dragons overhead!”

House of the Dragon will be filmed primarily in England which is a shift from Game of Thrones’ filming location in Northern Ireland. But just like its predecessor there will be filming locations around the world as well.
The show, whose first season will run just 10-episodes, is set in the early days of Westeros and focuses on House Targaryen. The series is based, whether loosely or closely we don’t know, on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood book, which details the lineage of the Targaryens 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Considine from The Outsiders will star as King Viserys Targaryen, who was chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen. George R.R. Martin describes the character as “a warm, kind, and decent man” who “only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy.” But as we are all well aware from Game of Thrones, good men do not necessarily make for great kings.
Miguel Sapochnik, who directed several fan-favorite episodes like “The Long Night,” “Battle of the Bastards” and “Hardhome” will serve as co-showrunner and executive produce alongside Sara Lee Hess, Vince Gerardis, and George R.R. Martin.
House of the Dragon will be released sometime in 2022.
