Well, the date is finally here—again. Grand Theft Auto VI, the game that’s been in development longer than most of us have had functioning relationships, now has an updated release date: May 26, 2026. But here’s the real kicker—it wasn’t Rockstar Games who broke the news. Nope. Not PlayStation either. The first and only account to announce this so far (as of this writing, five hours later) is @Xbox over on Twitter (now X).

Either part of some weird marketing strategy (most likely) or dumbass intern jumping the gun by mis-scheduling the Tweet (less likely but still possible), Xbox posted the date like it was no big deal—while Rockstar and everybody else sat there with their hands suspiciously off the keyboard. And PlayStation? They didn’t say squat. Just silence. Like they were told to stay in their lane while Xbox revved the engine and peeled out with the scoop. And Nintendo? lol, forget about it—ain’t no way this game lands on Switch 2.
Microsoft might have inked a deal for early marketing rights or an exclusive reveal window or maybe they just hacked into Rockstar’s Google Calendar. Whatever the case, Xbox is out here treating GTA VI news like it’s a birthday reminder and you can bet that on that day, which is a Tuesday, will unofficially be everyone’s birthday.
Regardless, that Tuesday will no doubt be the most called out “sick” day of the entire year.
The new release date means the game will be hitting all major gaming consoles—yes, consoles—on May 26th. That very deliberate word choice isn’t just to annoy PC players (though that’s a bonus); it’s because there’s still no PC version on the horizon. If Rockstar’s history with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 is anything to go by, you can probably expect GTA VI on PC sometime between eventually and whenever humanity colonizes Mars.
To put it bluntly: console peasants rejoice, PC master race—see you in 2027.
So there you have it. A game this massive, this hyped, this drenched in neon-soaked crime drama, and it took Xbox of all people to tell us when it’s coming out. Welcome to 2025.
