George R.R. Martin has inspired another TV project, but it isn’t based in Westeros…

As we all know, Martin is one of the most compelling and talented authors of his time, truly bringing his readers straight into the world(s) he writes about. His Game of Thrones novels are a work of art and have become one of the most successful television series as well. The author has written other novels other than the Game of Thrones series, and he has worked on other fantasy universes in his time as a writer and editor. One of the series that he collaborated on, was the ‘Wild Cards’ anthologies. Said to have the potential to rival todays Marvel and DC comic book worlds, “…the shared world of the Wild Cards diverged from our own on September 15, 1946 when an alien virus was released in the skies over Manhattan, and spread across an unsuspecting Earth,” Martin wrote on his website. It’s this specified universe, ‘Wild Cards’ that is claimed to get its own television series with a recent pickup by Universal Cable Productions.

UCP is best known by its productions of Monk, Psych, Mr. Robot, Battlestar Galactica, Suits, and much more. The initial volume of ‘Wild Cards’ came out back in 1986, where it was a runner up for the Hugo Award that was won by Alan Moore’s Watchmen. The ‘Wild Cards’ project has been a collaborative writing project with names like Melinda Snodgrass (Star Trek: The Next Generation) working as an editor and looking to now Executive Produce the television installment.

George RR Martin writes on his site that ‘Wild Cards’ is a “series of books, graphic novels, games… but most of all it is a universe, as large and diverse and exciting as the comic book universes of Marvel and DC (though somewhat grittier, and considerably more realistic and more consistent), with an enormous cast of characters both major and minor. There are thousands of stories to be told in the world of the Wild Cards, and Gregory and Melinda and UPC hope to be able to tell many of them.” With the current resurgence of DC and Marvel films, ‘Wild Cards’ could have the potential to compete with the two comic book franchises.

Due to Martin’s deal with HBO, he actually can’t work on the project at UCP. However, he endorsed Melinda Snodgrass and Gregory Noveck on his site who are designated to produce.

Martin hopes the show will hit our television screens in the next year or two.
