Channing Tatum’s X-Men spinoff film could still be happening, just not this year.
Sad news for those who were anticipating the Gambit film starring Channing Tatum, as 20th Century Fox has removed the film from its upcoming movie schedule.
Collider reports the film will not release October 6, as originally anticipated, and does not have a new official release date.
While definitely unfortunate, we can’t say this is a huge surprise. Gambit has had a very troubled preproduction since its inception. Within a few months, Channing Tatum reportedly left the film, then came back on, the original director dropped out of the project, and for a while, it looked like the film wasn’t going to happen at all.
The last time we saw Gambit on film was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, played by Taylor Kitsch. It’s best we all forget about that.
Even though in January it was reported that filming would begin this month in New Orleans, it now looks like Gambit has been shelved for the time being.
However, there is still a chance the charismatic card-wielding mutant will show up in the future.
Collider also reports that Fox has scheduled two mystery Marvel films; one set to release October 6, 2017, and the other January 12, 2018.
While nothing has been confirmed, we’d imagine Gambit has just been pushed back a year (taking that October 6, 2017 release date), allowing time to further develop the film, and work around Tatum’s busy schedule.
It was never addressed if production will cease this March, and director Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) is apparently still attached to the film.
With all that in mind, we have faith there will be more news about the return of Gambit soon.
So, what could the other Fox-distributed Marvel film (the one coming January 2018), be?
We know Fox is trying to develop a New Mutants film, but we haven’t heard much about that recently, and God forbid they’re crazy enough to make FANT4STIC 2, so our money is on either X-Force or Deadpool 2.
The time traveling mutant Cable is expected to appear in both Deadpool 2 and X-Force.
We know for sure that a Deadpool sequel is coming, and that Ryan Reynold is prioritizing an X-Force film, so chances are it will be one of the two.
Only time will tell, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on all things Marvel, Deadpool, and X-Men.
