Action veteran star Dolph Lundgren says he would be totally on board to ‘kick butt’ as Cable.
[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap] little while ago we covered that Cable, the tough, bionic arm wielding leader of X-Force, may be featured in the upcoming Deadpool Sequel.
The news came about thanks to Deadpool himself, who name dropped Cable in an after credits sequence in the first movie:
Deadpool: The sequel? We’re gonna have Cable. Amazing character – bionic arm, time travel… We have no idea who we’re gonna cast yet but it could be anybody.
And anybody is right – since the role has yet to be cast – but there has certainly been no shortage of names tossed around for the part. Mad Men’s Jon Hamm and actor Stephen Lang – who is admittedly a pretty close look-a-like to the comic book character – are the two most talked about possibilities in the mix so far.
Now it seems yet another name has surfaced for the role of the time-travelling son of Cyclops, and that name belongs to the previous Punisher (1989) star, Dolph Lundgren. In an interview with Nerdist (via Screenrant), Lundgren was asked if he would return to the Marvel fold if given the chance, to which the actor revealed he would quite like to play Cable:
“That’s a good question. I haven’t watched a lot of these superhero movies for some reason, I don’t know, I’m just busy making films. I did hear in… Deadpool, isn’t there a character named Cable that’s coming? Like, he’s a big guy? I guess I could kick some butt doing that, I suppose. We’ll see. When I saw the picture, he looks a little bit like Ivan Drago mixed with Gunner Jensen mixed with… I don’t know.”
Lundgren would be a solid choice for the role. He not only looks the part, but he’s got decades of action experience under his belt – with titles such as The Expendables and Universal Solider – which makes him a good fit for the bad-ass soldier who occasionally has to put up with Deadpool’s nonsense.
Director Tim Miller, who’s set to return with Reynolds and the first film’s writing team for the sequel, also recently spoke about the part of Cable. Miller made it clear that they want to cast someone who truly embodies the character, and it really wouldn’t be too hard to see Lundgren nailing the role, both looks-wise and character-wise.
Lundgren has gotten a pretty positive reaction from fans of Cable, and some fun fan-made posters of the actor outfitted as the comic book character have already been circling the inter-webs, such as this great fan-edit by devianart user JaneNBlake:
Lundgren is certainly a strong contender, and just by looking at him you can see he’s a pretty great fit. With the role still up for grabs, the actor should certainly get some consideration for the part.
Deadpool 2 is slated for release sometime in 2017. You can check out the interview with Lundgren here.
