Unveiled during a behind-the-scenes panel with the creators and cast of the original series, the announcement confirmed that Studio Trigger and CD Projekt Red are once again teaming up to drag us back into the neon-drenched chaos of Night City. While the first Edgerunners served as a prequel to Cyberpunk 2077, this new series is shrouded in mystery and is said to be a standalone story. No word yet on where it fits in the timeline exactly, or if you’ll see any familiar faces (so don’t get your hopes up for David).
Take a look at the Official Teaser:
While Edgerunners 2 won’t have Hiroyuki Imaishi back at the helm, it will feature Kai Ikarashi, a prolific animator who apparently looked at the original’s stylish brutality and said, “Yeah, I can emotionally devastate an audience too.” The show is in production, which means it’s coming eventually—but Netflix hasn’t dropped a release date yet.
Bartosz Sztybor—returning as showrunner, story writer, and producer—wants fans to know this isn’t a rehash. “David’s story might be over,” he said in the press release, presumably while stomping on our hearts again, “but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City.” He promises a “raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge,” which sounds like a great time until you remember what happened last time Trigger promised a “real” story (spoiler: it involved lots of tears).
Alongside Sztybor, Kanno Ichigo returns as lead character designer, and Masahiko Otsuka is back to write the screenplay, presumably while cackling maniacally over a keyboard. The new cast hasn’t been announced yet, but given how Netflix and Trigger operate, expect at least one breakout character to become the Internet’s new obsession before the first episode airs.
Whether you’re here for the cybernetic carnage or just eager to see how many times a single anime can make you sob into a hoodie, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is shaping up to be another high-octane gut punch. Buckle up, chooms—Night City isn’t done with you yet.
