Amazon Prime has Cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos in Live-Action God of War Series

From the voice of Thor to the physical embodiment of Kratos himself. Talk about an upgrade.

Ryan Hurst isn’t parachuting into the franchise cold. He already has deep roots in the God of War universe after voicing Thor in God of War Ragnarök, where his performance turned the thunder god from a mythological meathead into a terrifying, emotionally volatile wrecking ball. In other words, Hurst has already spent quality time screaming at Kratos, trying to kill him, and embodying the kind of divine rage that usually requires several broken controllers to fully appreciate.

Casting Hurst as Kratos feels like a logical escalation rather than a reinvention. He brings the physical presence, the gravel-throated intensity, and—crucially—the ability to sell a character who communicates entire emotional arcs while saying almost nothing at all. This is a man who made Thor feel unhinged, exhausted, and dangerous; giving him the Blades of Chaos just feels like a natural promotion.

Amazon’s God of War series has been under intense scrutiny since its announcement, largely because Kratos is the kind of character who collapses instantly if miscast. By choosing someone already battle-tested in the franchise’s tone and mythology, the production avoids the usual “prestige TV adaptation” pitfall of explaining the source material to someone who clearly Googled it the night before.

There is no official release date for God of War just yet but we assume filming is going to start very quickly now that Amazon has found its lead.
