Ryan Hurst was announced as Amazon’s Kratos back in January 2026, with filming getting underway in Vancouver in February. The casting made a certain amount of poetic sense, given that Hurst had already contributed his voice to God of War: Ragnarok, meaning he had a genuine connection to the franchise before ever stepping in front of a camera in the role.
Four months into production, however, Hurst tore his bicep performing a stunt in late June, which is the kind of injury that does not simply require a few weeks of rest and some ice packs. A full recovery from a bicep tear of that severity can take up to a year, and waiting that long was simply not an option the production was willing to take.
The decision was made to recast the role entirely rather than suspend filming into 2027, and every scene already shot with Hurst will need to be redone from scratch. That means four completed episodes are effectively being set aside, which is a brutal outcome for everyone involved and a particular gut punch for Hurst, who by all accounts was genuinely committed to the character and the project.
Frédéric Tual, who directed those first two episodes with Hurst, will reshoot them with the new lead, giving the production at least some directorial continuity as it rebuilds from the ground up.
The man stepping into the role is Dave Bautista, with Variety confirming the casting officially on August 20th after an earlier report that Bautista had been in active negotiations for the part. Bautista was reportedly the second choice for the role originally, which in retrospect looks less like a consolation prize and more like the universe course correcting. Prep is set to begin immediately, with production targeting a mid-October restart in Vancouver and Bautista having roughly two months to prepare before cameras roll again.
The case for Bautista in this role is not a difficult one to make. His background as a decorated professional wrestler gives him a physical foundation that very few actors working today can match, and his transition from the ring to serious film work has been one of the more quietly impressive career arcs in Hollywood over the last decade.
Guardians of the Galaxy established Bautista as someone capable of genuine emotional range inside a franchise property, Dune Part Two demonstrated he could carry dramatic weight in a prestige production, and Glass Onion showed a comedic self awareness that suggests a performer who is nowhere near the ceiling of what he can do.
Bautista also has an existing relationship with Amazon MGM Studios through the My Spy films and The Wrecking Crew, with additional roles in the studio’s forthcoming Highlander and Road House 2, meaning this is not a cold introduction between actor and studio under stressful circumstances.
The series, operating under showrunner Ronald D. Moore, follows Kratos and his young son Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother Faye, drawing primarily from the storyline of the 2018 God of War game.
The supporting cast surrounding Bautista includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin, Ed Skrein, Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Teresa Palmer, which is a genuinely strong ensemble for a show that has already survived more behind the scenes chaos than most productions encounter across an entire run.
Two seasons have been ordered back to back, meaning Amazon is committed to this world regardless of the turbulence, and with Bautista locked in and production restarting this fall, the God of War series is finally pointing in a direction worth being excited about again.
