The Aang Gang is back, baby!

The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender wrapped up its original story back in 2008, when Aang finally brought the Hundred Year War to an end and the credits rolled on one of Nickelodeon’s most beloved animated series and In 2012, the franchise returned with The Legend of Korra, introducing a new Avatar and pushing the story decades into the future.

But the cycle of reincarnation, however, is not done spinning.

Sometime in 2027, the Avatar universe will introduce yet another successor in the upcoming series Avatar: Seven Havens, where an Earthbender is expected to take on the role of the next Avatar. Until that series arrives, the franchise has been busy filling in the timeline with several new projects, most notably an animated film that revisits the original Team Avatar long after the events of the first series.

And after years of announcements, shifting plans, and title changes, fans have finally gotten their first real glimpse of what that return will look like.

The project itself dates all the way back to February 2021, when Paramount and Nickelodeon announced the formation of Avatar Studios. The new division was created specifically to expand the animated universe with additional films and television projects. The first major production on the slate was an animated theatrical movie centered on the adult versions of Aang and his friends, with production beginning later that same year.

By 2022, longtime Avatar creative Lauren Montgomery, who previously worked as a storyboard artist on the original series and later served as a supervising producer on The Legend of Korra, was officially confirmed as the film’s director. Two years later, Paramount revealed the film’s initial title and the cast bringing the grown-up characters to life. Singer Eric Nam was cast as Aang, joined by Dionne Quan as Toph, Jessica Matten as Katara, and Román Zaragoza as Sokka. Dave Bautista also joined the film in the role of an as-yet unnamed antagonist.

Like many large projects, the movie has gone through a few identity changes along the way. It was first introduced under the title Aang: The Last Airbender before later being renamed The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. After a recent screening of the finished film for the cast and crew, posts from those in attendance revealed that the project appears to have received yet another title adjustment, now going by Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender.

As for when the story actually takes place, that remains somewhat vague. Based on the characters’ appearances, the group seems to be somewhere in their mid-twenties, placing the story several years after the original series but well before the era depicted in The Legend of Korra.

There is one change longtime fans may notice immediately. None of the original voice actors from the 2005 series are returning for the film, with the adult versions of the characters being portrayed by an entirely new cast.

Still, the opportunity to see Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko reunited years after their original adventure is enough to generate plenty of excitement. Even if the film has taken a slight detour, from an originally planned theatrical release to a streaming debut on Paramount+, fans will finally get to see what the Gaang looks like all grown up when the movie arrives this October.
