Just moments ago, the PlayStation Showcase wrapped up with a handful of interesting reveals including Bungie’s return to Marathon, among others. But perhaps the most exciting reveal of the showcase, at least for Destiny 2 fans, was the unexpected reveal of Cayde-6 in a teaser for Destiny 2’s final expansion, The Final Shape.
In the clip, which you can see below, Warlock Vanguard Ikora is seen sitting around a campfire, accompanied by her Ghost, seemingly speaking to someone off-screen. She expresses how so many things have happened and that she wishes “you could have been there” before the camera pans across the flames to reveal Cayde-6, clutching a shattered Ace of Spades Hand Cannon. Cayde returns the sentiment back to Ikora, expressing his regret for not having been there when they needed him but he is back now to do what he can to help.
And the best part? Nathan Fillion is back to voice the character. Take a look:
Talk about major cameos! Also, during today’s Sony event, we showed off the first look at Destiny 2: The Final Shape, including the brief appearance of everyone’s favorite Hunter, Cayde-6. We’re delighted to say that actor Nathan Fillion is reprising his role as Cayde for the Destiny Universe.
Today’s tease of the next Destiny 2 expansion was just that: a teaser. The epic conclusion to the Light & Darkness Saga is on its way and we can’t wait to share more with you in August during our Destiny 2 Showcase event. Look for this livestreamed show on Tuesday, August 22, where the Destiny development team will be breaking down everything you need to know about The Final Shape and provide a look forward into the future of Destiny 2.
It is hard to say how this all plays into things as Destiny 2’s narrative is sort of all over the map at this point. Whether Cayde is officially alive as his original self, reborn through the Light somehow and now re-named Cayde-7, or possibly some sort of sentient echo of his former self, all remains to be explored. As for who or what this form of Cayde is, from the trailer above, it would seem that he and Ikora are inside the Traveler, based on the large pink triangular portal/scar in the sky.
Cayde-6, who had famously been killed off in the Forsaken Campaign, and was replaced by voice actor Nolan North, has not had a lot of involvement in the Destiny franchise since. A few references here, and a few legacy missions there with pre-recorded voice lines belonging to Fillion, left many new players wondering who Cayde was. Now, it seems they will have the opportunity to find out as Bungie is bringing back the most beloved character in the franchise’s history with the last major expansion for what Bungie calls “The Light and Dark Saga”. Let’s hope they don’t blow it.
Bungie plans on revealing more of The Final Shape this August ahead of its official release in early 2024.
