Nintendo confirmed during its Japanese Nintendo Direct, that a new 3DS would launch in Japan, dubbed the Nintendo 3DS LL, later this year and is expected (but not confirmed) to launch in North America in early 2015. The new 3DS will be region-locked.

At first glance, the new 3DS looks a lot like it’s predecessor. So what’s new about it? Let’s take a look:

New 3DS Designs

The new 3DS features a smaller analog “nub” above the A, B, X and Y buttons and the buttons themselves have been colored to match the SNES controller. There will be two extra shoulder buttons next to the ZR and ZL buttons, as well as some speed improvements that are supposed to make the menu and downloads a bit quicker. The stereoscopic 3D effect should also be enhanced slightly.

New 3DS XL Designs

Nintendo will be releasing three new variations of the 3DS XL. The first celebrates the release of the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. It comes in both blue and red and will be available on September 19, ahead of the October 3 release of the game. The next two are GameStop Exclusives: a Persona Q edition that will launch alongside Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth available November 25. Finally, a classic NES theme available October 10. All three will be available for $199. Check them out below.
