John Carpenter, the master of horror behind such films as Halloween, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China, has long since been a fan of video games and a proponent of video games becoming films. And one such game he wants to see turned into a movie under his direction is the critically acclaimed Dead Space.
Speaking with AV Club, Carpenter discussed the upcoming finale to Halloween in Halloween Ends but also chimed in about some of his favorite video games of the year. During the interview, Carpenter expressed an interest in seeing Dead Space made into a film that he himself would like to oversee after being asked what video game adaptation he would make into a movie.
“The only one I can think of, and I’ve mentioned it before, is Dead Space. That would make a real great movie. I could do that.”
Carpenter went on to express his love for the series, especially Dead Space 3, a title that seemed to focus more on action rather than horror while implementing microtransactions, a series first that sparked outrage from fans toward publisher EA. Carpenter added that he liked all the games and would be happy to see any of them become a movie.
Carpenter previously made comments all the way back in 2013 where he said that he thought Dead Space would make a great movie. Many agreed, as long as the right hands were involved in its adaptation. Carpenter certainly seems the right man for the job but currently, there are no open or public discussions about the possibility of the game being made into a movie, despite fans demanding more in and from the Dead Space universe.
Dead Space has been getting a lot of buzz lately as the first game from 2008 is getting a remake in 2023 with modern tech. We have no idea what the future beyond the remake is but we assume a lot of that hangs in the balance of whether the remake sells well enough.
The Dead Space Remake recently got an official gameplay trailer, which you can watch for yourself below. The game is set to release on January 27th, 2023 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC through Steam and Epic Games.
