During a recent interview with Variety, Captain America actor Chris Evans sat down with MCU costar Scarlett Johansson and discussed the possibility of picking up the shield again in the MCU.
The interview, which is part of Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ segment, has Johansson asking the big question on returning as Cap, to which Evans had this to say:
“Everything clicks when I get up. Recovery is not the same. You never say never. I love the character. I don’t know… It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either. There are other things that I’m working on right now. I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey. If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited. What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together… It doesn’t feel, at this time, that would be a thing.“
To us, “I don’t know” is a much better response than a hard no, and he clearly says that his response is ‘not a hard no‘. Clearly Evans has his head on straight. He recognizes that the character and the MCU mean a lot to a lot of people, and it can’t just be all about the money. Bringing the character back has to have purpose and meaning and it has to be a profound return that matters. Plus, Chris Evans is working very hard on other projects in front of and behind the camera, so for now, Captain America will take a long break and the MCU will just have to expand without him.
Maybe he will come back someday, and maybe he won’t. We just need to be grateful for the time and performance we got with Chris Evans as Captain America.
