Game of Thrones Prequel Series Reportedly Scrapped by HBO

The prequel series allegedly got the ugly ax after a poor first draft of the pilot, with excessive reshoots leading to HBO just scrapping the whole thing.

Game of Thrones continues to leave a bad taste in people’s mouths- from the entire 8th and final season to showrunners D&D taking on Star Wars (wait, they are no longer doing it, woohoo!), and now the prequel series starring Naomi Watts has been tossed into the trash.

Deadline is reporting that the series, which was set 1,000 years before the main series, is being canned. Allegedly, series showrunner Jane Goldman had to contact members of the cast and crew to personally inform them that the pilot was dead and that HBO would not be moving forward.

HBO has allegedly not commented or even confirmed that this was the case, so things could change quickly on this matter at any time. We do know, at the very least, that HBO is not done with Game of Thrones completely, as a second prequel series, set a few hundred years before ‘Bran the Broken’ became king (ugh), written by George RR Martin and Ryan Condal, received an ‘unofficial green light’ for a pilot in September.

Apparently, HBO had a variety of scripts commissioned for a Game of Thrones prequel series, so it is entirely plausible that we may get more than one of those eventually. No telling on what the exact reason is that Goldman’s version was axed, nor if Naomi Watts will be returning in a future prequel series at all, but word is getting around that it may have had something to due with HBO just not being happy with the first round of the pilot. This allegedly lead to reshoots, and then something, something, and then the whole thing was scrapped.

HBO is currently in the process of putting out a new upgraded version of their streaming service, and no doubt they will have Game of Thrones all over it. We expect to see a prequel series for sure, just no telling with whom cast as whom, nor when it will take place.

Our thoughts? Well, maybe they just want to give the internet a little more time to let go of the divisive 8th and final D&D season a little longer before jumping into more GoT…
