A New Saiyan…Whom Nobody Knows…Except for Every Dragon Ball Fan for the Last 20 Years
Today at San Diego Comic-Con, Funimation unveiled our first look at the English dub of the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie featuring Broly. Check it out below.
Set after the events of Dragon Ball Super, a mysterious Saiyan (“whom nobody knows”) arrives on Earth and challenges Vegeta, Frieza, and Goku, while unleashing never before seen power.
This Saiyan is of course Broly, a very popular Dragon Ball movie character who is has been reworked into the series official canon thanks to direct contributions from series creator Akira Toriyama.
In addition to contributing to the film’s story and screenplay, Toriyama is of course providing character designs, including a more green Broly, including his weird fur-pelt thing around his waist (is that the Great Ape skin of his mom or something?).
What has us most excited about Dragon Ball Super: Broly is the film’s animation. Unlike the Dragon Ball: Super series, this film takes on the visual aesthetics of the Saiyan Saga and Frieza Saga of the Dragon Ball Z anime. Notice below in this frame of Vegeta the simple, yet dense line work and the light, but very effective shadowing on his face.
These factors, and the full, rich coloring, harkens back to the menacing Vegeta of the Saiyan Saga, and I’m in love.
With gorgeous animation and hopefully a fun story, we’re super excited for Broly’s return.
Dragon Ball Super: Broly debuts in North America January 2019.
