Gambit is still on the cards for Tatum.
[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he Gambit spin-off movie has been in the works for so long now, folks can be forgiven for shifting their focus onto other Marvel releases that are actually making their way to the big screens this year. With several setbacks under its belt already – including the departures of two directors (Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman) – the troubled Marvel movie has suffered from a serious bout of delays.
One factor that’s still keeping the prospect of this film alive is its leading man, Channing Tatum.
If Tatum ever did walk away from the title role, the project could fall apart entirely. But, thankfully, Tatum doesn’t appear to be going anywhere for the time being.
Buzzfeed’s Jarett Wieselman reported from the TCA’s this month (via Yahoo), during which film producer Laura Shuler Donner confirmed that Tatum is still attached to play the kinetic energy-wielding mutant:
Channing Tatum is still attached to play Gambit in a standalone #XMen movie, Lauren Shuler Donner told press in the scrum #TCA17

So all hope is not lost. Rumours are making the rounds that Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont has taken over directing duties, but it hasn’t been confirmed either way. Keeping its leading man on board is one hurdle the film needs to stay on top of, but it’s still likely going to be a long time before we see this film grace our big screens. At least we’ve got plenty of other Marvel films in the line-up to tide us over until then – I’m looking at you, Logan.
Gambit is currently in production and a release date has not yet been announced.
