The Fantastic Four reboot may have been a disaster, but that doesn’t mean the characters can’t be used elsewhere!
[dropcap size=small]L[/dropcap]ast year’s reboot attempt of Fant4stic was awful. When it failed huge expectations that it had in the box office, it further damaged the image that Fantastic Four once had. But with Marvel starting to expand all of it’s heroes, there’s still a possibility that Marvel can reacquire the Fantastic Four from Fox and mold it into what they want the franchise to look like. Director James Gunn, who directed Guardians of the Galaxy, has voiced his opinion on specifically which characters he would like to use.
Gunn hosted a one-hour Q&A on his Facebook page, answering questions from fans on what characters he would use from the Fantastic Four in Guardians of the Galaxy. His answer would actually surprise you:
I probably wouldn’t add Ben Grimm to the Guardians team even if they were a part of the MCU. And of course I would love the FF to be a part of the MCU…Fox owns so many great villains and cosmic characters I would love to play around with including Annihilus — and I think they own Kang.
The current comic series actually has the Fantastic Four separated. Sue and Reed Richards are creating their own multiverse with their children. The Thing and The Human Torch joined new superhero teams. But as Gunn already said, he’s more interested in FF’s villains than the heroes themselves.
Fox has a plethora of character rights that Gunn could choose from, if he makes a decision where Marvel would have to buy rights to character(s), in order to create a plot in Guardians of the Galaxy. Characters (specifically villains) that Gunn could choose from include Dr. Doom, Galactus, Annihilus and Kang. Gunn named off Annihilus and Kang and to add those characters to the MCU would be huge.
Annihilus, whos features make him out as a bug warlord from another dimension, travels across the galaxy with a massive army at his disposal. He’s super strong and has been one of Fantastic Four’s main enemies. But, he has also caused trouble for the Guardians of the Galaxy. In the Marvel story Annihilation, every cosmic hero had to team up in order to stop Annihilus from taking over the galaxy. The story also stars Thanos, who will be in The Avengers: Infinity War Part I and II, played a significant role for the villains. So Gunn’s idea of adding these guys makes sense.
Kang is a time-traveler who can manipulate other time periods so that there will be a future ruler. It gets confusing because of the fact that there’s always two of this guy somewhere in the galaxy (for example, his future self is roaming around and on the other side of the galaxy, there’s his teenage self.) Even though most of his confrontations are with the Avengers, his first was with the Fantastic Four.
Are you excited to potentially see either of these villains in Guardians of the Galaxy? Let us know in the comments below!
