With Captain America and Iron Man’s teams set for a battle of the ages, we look at a villain who hasn’t gotten the spotlight yet!
[dropcap size=small]W[/dropcap]e are only weeks away from Marvel’s most anticipated movie of 2016: Captain America: Civil War! yet there are a few characters that were not seen in any trailer, including David Brühl’s Baron Zemo.
The trailers that we have seen featured Thunderbolt Ross and Crossbones as villains in the movie, but Zemo has been kept a secret for a while now. The reason for this is that Marvel told Brühl that he couldn’t reveal anything about his character.
“I was really told not to because there are so many secrets in the film. And also my character’s quite mysterious, so I’m really scared to say too much. The things I’ve mentioned in interviews before were already too much – and I thought it was nothing!”
Brühl wasn’t able to give out details to how his character is involved in the Sovokia Accords conflict, but he did say that his character is “not a guy who’s mean and sinister” and is in fact “very clever – a very smart guy who does everything out of a very understandable reason and motivation”. Brühl also said that his character is the mastermind of the conflict, describing it as the following:
“Some of the things that happen in the film, and why they happen, are because of him. He is orchestrating things that happen throughout the film. I think that’s something I can say, goddam it!”
According to the comics, Baron Zemo is a high-ranking Nazi scientist and with his buzzbomb, he ended his war with Captain America and Bucky Barnes, killing both in the process. When Captain America came back, Zemo came out of hiding in South America since the Nazis crumbled.
Zemo’s costume includes a hood that is attached to his face because of an experiment called Adhesive X, which spilled on Zemo when Captain America threw his shield at the substance, releasing it from the vat.
Eventually, Zemo created a group of villains to counter The Avengers called Masters of Evil. Later on his son, Baron Helmut Zemo, would take his place with the name Citizen V and formed a secret squad of villains known as The Thunderbolts.
We don’t know if Brühl will be playing the father Baron or son Baron, but the fact that he has history with Captain America gives the idea that he will be a huge factor in Captain America: Civil War. This could also open the door for either The Thunderbolts or Masters of Evil to make an appearance in future films. One thing that will be different from the comics is that Zemo will not be wearing his mask in Captain America: Civil War.
Only 3 weeks away before Captain America: Civil War hits theaters!
