Simon Kinberg believes it’s the dawn of a new franchise.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he 1976 sci-fi classic Logan’s Run is on it’s way to being remade, and producer Simon Kinberg has expressed his belief that it’s set to potentially be another big franchise production for Warner Bros.

Kinberg even went as far as to liken it to the hugely successful Hunger Games series which took the world by storm when speaking to Collider:

It’s something that potentially is their Hunger Games kind of franchise that is about a younger audience for a younger audience with a big idea. And Logan’s Run, as you know, is the granddaddy of Maze Runner and Hunger Games and so many of these books and movies now. So yeah, they’re seeing it as a potentially really big franchise.

In the original 70’s movie, the film follows an idyllic, futuristic world set in the year 2274, with a society that enjoys every comfort inside a dome. The only snag is that life for everyone must end at 30 years by a process known as ‘Carousel’, which is carried out by a religious group. Runners are those that try to escape such a fate.

It seems the remake is planning on taking this concept and changing it up in true Hollywood style, by making the age 21 instead of 30.

With both Hunger Games and Logan’s Run being set in futuristic worlds, with those that must fight to survive and make a change in a society that isn’t all that idyllic, you can see why Kinberg has compared the two.

Michael York and Jenny Agutter took on the title roles, but so far no one has been cast for the remake.

Kinberg also spoke about what their intentions were in terms of how they will go about the remake, and mentioned that they’ll be drawing a lot from the original movie’s concept, whilst still trying to be keep it fresh:

[T]here’s a lot from the original film in it, and then there’s a lot of—I guess I would call it reinterpretation from the original film rather than just a whole scale recreation

You can’t help but wonder how the film will look stylistically too, and how an updated take on the 70’s futuristic set design and costumes will turn out.

Only time will tell if the remake will really be akin to Hunger Games and enjoy the same level of success.

The film is currently in development with no release date as of yet.
