Pacific Rim 2 Officially Set to Release in 2017

Since the release of Pacific Rim, there have been a lot of rumors of a possible sequel. However, due to low domestic box office yields, it appeared that Legendary Pictures might not be too keen to the idea. Out of the $411 million that the film grossed globally, only $101.8 million was from US sales.

Today, director Guillermo Del Toro took to YouTube to announce that Legendary is fully committed to the project and that we will indeed see more Jaeger-on-Kaiju action come April 7, 2017.

Here’s the announcement:

The screenplay is currently being penned by Guillermo Del Toro with help from Zak Penn (Behind Enemy Lines) and Travis Beacham (Clash of the TitansPacific Rim).

The original cast, — including Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman — is expected to return, but currently no specific deals have been set.

If you can’t quite wait until 2017 for your giant robot fix, Del Toro also spoke briefly about a Pacific Rim animated series that he’ll be creating with Legendary. The series is expected to take place in the same world as the films and we can expect it to release prior to Pacific Rim 2.
