Some details on the Guillermo del Toro-directed sequel are beginning to come out a year since the movie was officially announced.

[dropcap size=small]A[/dropcap] year since Guillermo del Toro announced Pacific Rim 2, we are finally starting to get some details on the sci-fi sequel. The release date has officially been set to August 4th, 2017, production begins this November, and the film has a working title, which might give away some of what we’re in for.

The current title is Maelstrom, although this is still subject to change; Universal is yet to confirm the name of the film. While no one really knows what Maelstrom means, it sounds like something that might pop through a portal and destroy some stuff. Back in November though, del Toro suggested that the sequel wouldn’t follow the exact same pattern as the first.

‘It’s gonna be a different adventure. It’s a few years after the first one. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju aren’t a threat. It’s quite a jump.’

Charlie Hunman, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are all expected to return for Pacific Rim 2, and whether or not they, as well as del Toro, return for a third installment will depend on the success of the sequel.

Help make a Pacific Rim trilogy happen by seeing Pacific Rim 2 on August 4th, 2017.
