Over the weekend, Kevin Feige gave the world a look at his plans for the upcoming Spider-Man reboot.

[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]he new Spider-Man reboot will be centered on a much younger Peter Parker played by 19-year-old Tom Holland. This will be the first time that a Spider-Man movie will be set around the time of Parker’s life where he is juggling school, work, family and friends, and the new responsibility of being Spider-Man. And this time period is exactly what Marvel Studios co-president and producer Kevin Feige wants to explore. Over the weekend at the Ant-Man junket, Feige was asked what type of movie the Spider-Man reboot would be, to which he responded:

“Spider-Man will be a John Hughes movie.”

John Hughes is the talented writer and director who brought us classics like National Lampoon’s Vacation, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Home Alone. But the comment was probably referencing Hughes movies where the characters were in a high school setting. Tom Holland was recently confirmed to be appearing as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU and is the youngest actor to play the character yet. This fits Feige’s vision of the character in upcoming Marvel projects. Feige has previously said that:

“We want to play with Spider-Man in the high school years because frankly there’ve been five Spider-Man films and the amazing thing about it is, even though there’ve been five Spider-Man films, there are so many things from the comics that haven’t been done yet. Not just characters or villains or supporting characters, but sides to his character. The most obvious being the ‘young, doesn’t quite fit in’ kid before his powers, and then the fella that puts on a mask and swings around and fights bad guys and doesn’t shut up, which is something we want to play with and we’re excited about. […] [S]ome of my favorite Spider-Man arcs and Spider-Man stories, he’s in high school for a lot of it. We want to explore that. That also makes him very, very different from any of our other characters in the MCU, which is something else we want to explore: how unique he is when now put against all these other characters.”

Feige has stated that the future Spider-Man movie will not be an origin story because audiences have seen that twice before already. Instead the movie will be more focused on Spider-Man and his interactions with other heroes. Feige said in an interview with Zap2It that:

“The biggest thing … is that it takes place in this universe. It’s the first time that you’ll be able to see Spider-Man like he was in the comics, as a very different type of hero when compared to the other heroes in the universe. Up until this point in the other Spidey films — some of which are some of the best superhero movies ever made — he was the only hero, and now he’s not. Now he’s a kid in Queens with these powers and has other [superheroes] to look to.”

Feige has also expressed interest in introducing a new Spider-Man villain for the film. This does not mean that the producers and writers will be creating a brand new villain for the film; just bringing in one that has not been seen on the big screen yet. Since the film would be set when Peter is in high school, it could be assumed that there will be no large elaborate ‘I’m going to take over the world’ villain, but maybe someone like Vulture or Kraven the Hunter or Rhino (no, the appearance in Amazing Spider-Man 2 does not count). What villain would you like to see Spider-Man battle it out with? Let us know in the comments!

The untitled Spider-Man reboot is scheduled for release on July 28, 2017.
