James Horner was piloting a small, personal aircraft when it crashed into a remote area roughly sixty miles north of Santa Barbara, California. A fire service official said the plane was a two-seater S-312 Tucano MK1 turbo-prop that went down in the Los Padres National Forest. James Horner was the only passenger and his death was confirmed by his assistant Sylvia Patrycja.

“We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart and unbelievable talent,” Patrycja wrote on Facebook on Monday. “He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road.”

James Horner was a very talented film composer, with over one hundred and fifty pieces that he is credited with. He collaborated with director James Cameron on many films and he was nominated several times for an Academy Award for his work on films like Avatar, House of Sand and Fog, A Beautiful Mind, Titanic, Apollo 13, Braveheart, Field of Dreams, An American Tail, and Aliens. He won two Academy Wards for (Best Music and Original Song, for his work on James Cameron’s Titanic.

“My job — and it’s something I discuss with Jim all the time — is to make sure at every turn of the film it’s something the audience can feel with their heart,” Horner said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times back in 2009. “When we lose a character, when somebody wins, when somebody loses, when someone disappears — at all times I’m keeping track, constantly, of what the heart is supposed to be feeling. That is my primary role.”

Horner’s most recent projects include Southpaw, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rachel McAdams, which will be released next month. And he was also rumored to be working on the film soundtracks for the next two sequels to Avatar.
