Many popular movie franchises will be becoming TV series this summer and fall.
Many networks will be seeing the premieres of new TV shows based on feature films this upcoming summer and fall. Movies like Rush Hour, Limitless, and Minority Report will all be receiving either sequel series or reboots. 10 series of this kind are set to premiere in the future across many major broadcasting, cable, and streaming networks.
CBS will be premiering three shows based off of two films and a documentary. Rush Hour, based on the 90’s comedy featuring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker, will be rebooted staring Jon Foo and Justin Hires in the leading roles of Chief Lee and Detective Carter respectively. Justin Hires has expressed his excitement for the series saying “I get to do action, comedy and drama all in one show — that’s already an established franchise.” Although Rush Hour is already an established franchise, CBS’ executive VP of drama series development Christina Davis says that the series needs to be able to exist on its own. She says that, “You can’t just rely on title alone. It’s more about what’s inside — the beating heart of the show. A movie can have a great hook and a great premise and great characters, but you have to be able to take the title off and it still has to exist as a great TV show.” The Rush Hour TV show will be completely unattached to the original movie
CBS will also be adapting the 2011 thriller Limitless staring Bradley Cooper into a series. Cooper is an executive producer for the show and will also be featured, as a recurring character through the series, although how many episodes he will be in is unknown. The show will serve as a sequel to the events that happened in the movie. CBS will also be premiering a new medical drama based on documentary Code Black by Ryan McGarry which is about …. Supergirl in October and stars Melissa Benoist as the title character.
Uncle Buck, based on John Hughes’ 1989 movie starring John Candy, will be rebooted on ABC with comedian Mike Epps as the the title character.
Stephen Spielberg will be executive producing a Minority Report TV show which will serve as a sequel to his 2002 sci-fi hit starring Tom Cruise for Fox.
A few other notables are being premiered on USA Network, Nickelodeon, and MTV. Mark Wahlberg’s 2007 Shooter is being developed for series at USA with Wahlberg producing. School of Rock will be receiving a show on Nickelodeon but Jack Black will not be attached to the show in any way. An entirely new cast will be featured in the reboot. MTV’s Scream stars Willa Fitzgerald in a new twist on a long time fan-favorite horror franchise. Wes Craven, director of all four feature films, is in the executive producers role. The show is set to premiere in June.
Netflix is even showing up in the mix and will be creating a prequel for Wet Hot American Summer, which reunites many from the original cast including Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Christopher Meloni and Paul. The show is set to start streaming in July.
All of these shows are expected to premiere either this summer or this coming fall. Which of these shows are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments!
