[dropcap size=small]T[/dropcap]here have been plenty of rumors lately regarding Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically in Captain America: Civil War due out in 2016. Now that the movie’s script is nearly complete and will begin shooting soon, it looks as though Peter Parker won’t make it into the film, despite the character playing an integral part in the story from the comics. Marvel has since announced that Black Panther will assume Spidey’s role as mediator between Iron Man and Cap, but now the latest rumor is that everyone’s favorite wall-crawler will show up in the third Avengers film.
Latino Review broke the alleged news that Spidey would show up in 2018’s The Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1, and the Internet lost its mind. When the Civil War rumors initally circulated, Sony had no comment on the matter, most likely due to the fact that it was one of a multitude of stories that came to light due to the studio being hacked. In response to the rumor that the webslinger might appear in the next Avengers film, trusted comic news site Comic Book Resources reached out to Sony to see if there was any truth to the story. Sony responded fairly quickly and stated that it was an “old rumor” with “no validity whatsoever.” So there you have it. Spider-Man will not be appearing in the next Captain America film nor the second Avengers sequel.
While I certainly hope that Sony and Marvel can come to some sort of agreement in the future to bring Spider-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it doesn’t look like it will be in Marvel’s Phase Three.
Do you think the films will suffer by not featuring Spider-Man? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
Captain America: Civil War is due out in theaters on May 6, 2016, and The Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 hits theaters May 4, 2018.
