Right now, Avengers: Infinity War is dominating in theaters all over the world and just might break $2 billion if it keeps it up. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Epic Games has decided to bring one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most feared villains into the game.In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Epic Games’ worldwide creative director Donald Mustard talked about how Joe Russo, who is one of the directors for the film, called him up and pitched the idea to him.
“Out of the blue, I get this call from Joe. And after a bit of geeking out over each other’s work, we start brainstorming these crazy ideas. It was really important that whatever we did, it had to be super authentic to both Fortnite and the Avengers: Infinity War, and something that fans of both would be excited about. About an hour later, we had the bones of this awesome idea for a limited time gameplay mode, and almost immediately our team got started.”
As it so happens, it appears the Russo brothers are a big fan of the game and so they ‘stalked’ Donald Mustard. “Over the past few months, while we were editing Infinity War, we’d take breaks to hop on and get in a few games,” explains Joe. “And then we started thinking, how cool would it be to have some kind of Avengers–Fortnite mashup? So we stalked Donald.”
Whether or not you’ll be able to grab some Avengers-theme gear remains to be seen but the Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup mode for Battle Royale will feel just like an ordinary Battle Royal with one hundred players landing around the map and fighting until only one is left standing. However, this time the Infinity Gauntlet with all six Infinity Stones will appear somewhere on the map. Whoever finds it will transform into Thanos himself and will be able to wield all the power that he holds.
At least, in theory. Donald Mustard didn’t go into detail about what powers are granted and if you’ll be able to snap your fingers to victory. But either way, this may just be one of the most ambitious crossovers in human history coming to PC, Mac, Xbox, PS4, and iOS.
