“Finally”
The third entry of a certain Owen Wilson/ Jackie Chan film series is now in development.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess has signed on to direct Shanghai Dawn, the second sequel to Shanghai Noon, with the lead actors in negotiation to reprise their roles.
If you can recall, Shanghai Noon released all the way back in 2000, and starred Chan as Imperial Guard Chon Wang and Owen Wilson as brash outlaw Roy O’Bannon. Set in the late 1800’s, the duo pairs up to stop crime; wacky hijinks ensue; etc. The film did well enough to spawn a sequel in 2003 with Shanghai Knights. Set in England, the duo pairs up to stop crime; wacky hijinks ensue; etc.

Both Shanghai movies weren’t huge successes (neither cracking $100 million at the box office), and we can’t say Chan or Wilson are as big of stars as they were 16 years ago, but hey, maybe this movie is just what we need. Maybe through witty writing and hilarious action, Shanghai Dawn will be definitive proof that making a new entry in a long forgotten film series is a great idea, and a surefire way to make big bucks at box office.
Nope.
