Smith’s soulful voice will open 007’s return to the big screen.

Sam Smith confirmed that he will be singing the next Bond theme for the upcoming 007 instalment, Spectre. Making a statement via Twitter this morning, Smith expressed his joy and excitement at being able to sing for such an ‘iconic British legacy’, and one of his ‘biggest musical inspirations’.

There were rumours aplenty that the British singer was involved when he posted a picture of himself wearing a ring donning the Spectre emblem on Twitter and Instagram on Monday afternoon.

The song, which was revealed to be called Writing’s on the Wall, is written by Smith and Jimmy Napes, – who co-wrote Smith’s hit single Stay With Me – with additional production from electric duo, Disclosure. The new Bond theme is set to make its debut September 25th this year.

Smith will be the first British male solo artist to sing the Bond theme since Tom Jones, who sang the song Thunderball for the Bond film of the same name back in 1965.

Spectre follows on from 2012’s Skyfall, where Bond receives a cryptic message that leads him onto the trail of a sinister organization. Sam Mendes will be directing, with Daniel Craig returning as Bond alongside an all-star cast – featuring the likes of Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz and Ben Whishaw.

Smith’s soulful voice is sure to be the perfect fit for the eternally suave 007.

You can pre-order Writing’s on the Wall on CD and Vinyl on Smith’s website, and it will also be available to pre-order on Itunes from 9 September, 2015.

Spectre is due out in theatres 6 November, 2015.
