Ryan Gosling Wakes Up in Deep Space with Amnesia in First Trailer ‘for Project Hail Mary’

Now if only he could remember how to work the coffee machine on the ship.

Ryan Gosling is back in orbit and this time, he’s not singing about Ken’s existential dread—he’s busy saving humanity in Project Hail Mary. The first official trailer for the upcoming sci-fi thriller just dropped, and if you’ve ever wanted to see Gosling go full MacGyver in deep space with no memory, now’s your chance.

Based on Andy Weir’s 2021 best-selling novel (yes, The Martian guy is back to traumatize us with science again), Project Hail Mary stars Gosling as Ryland Grace, a mild-mannered high school science teacher turned last-hope astronaut. Grace wakes up aboard a mysterious spacecraft, floating alone in the endless void with no recollection of who he is or what he’s doing there. Classic Monday.

As the trailer teases, the mystery slowly unravels: Grace is the only surviving crew member of a desperate mission to the Tau Ceti solar system. His job? Solve a cosmic crisis that’s threatening to turn Earth into a microwaved meatball. And while the premise screams Interstellar meets Cast Away with a Bunsen burner, things take a surprising turn when Grace discovers he might not be alone out there after all. (Cue ominous music and/or adorable alien friend, your call.)

The film is directed by dynamic duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the same pair responsible for The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street, and making you cry over a cartoon pig in Into the Spider-Verse. This time they’re trading animated bricks for airlocks and emotional breakdowns in zero-G.

Joining Gosling is acclaimed German actress Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) and Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us, your favorite AT&T commercials), rounding out a cast that will presumably have to yell “RYLAND, NO!” at least once before the final act.

Project Hail Mary launches into theaters on March 20, 2026, which gives you plenty of time to brush up on astrophysics or at least memorize the difference between a nebula and a supernova. Whether you’re here for hard science, existential terror, or just want to watch Gosling try to outsmart the universe with a whiteboard and a dream, this might be the one space movie that actually sticks the landing.
